Tying the Knot Tighter ~ Marriage Builders

One of the best ways in marriage to grow closer to each other and closer to the Lord is by reading great books together. As a couple, we have read many marriage and parenting books together, but there is not always time to read an in-depth book. As we enter into a new phase of our life with two young babies, we have found that our reading time has been drastically reduced, but we still know how important it is!

That’s why we are so excited for this great marriage resource, Tying the Knot Tighter. It is short, to the point, easy to read, Biblically sound, and convicting!

Tying the Knot Tighter ~ Marriage Builders Resource

Tying the Knot Tighter by Martha Peace and John Crotts is a perfect book for couples with limited reading time. It is short, to the point, and written in a very down to earth style. Peace and Crotts have taken 19 aspects of marriage, including growing together, respect, love, communication, sex, parenting, and many others, and have broken them down in a very easy to grasp way. Each section is only 4-5 pages long, and includes reflection and application questions at the end of each. This makes it able to be read in quick segments that can easily be fit into a busy life. The questions also encourage conversation between you and your spouse.

When my wife and I first picked this book up, we were a little leery about the format. Short sections? Won’t that make it too basic and superficial? The answer is no, it is neither too basic nor superficial. The authors stick close to the Bible, citing Scriptural back up frequently. They also don’t pull any punches, and clearly state biblical commands without equivocation. When it comes to practical application, this little book is full of it! Each chapter has suggestions on how to implement the principals into your marriage. For example, in the chapter on parenting, Peace and Crotts describe several ways to raise children in the Lord. It’s a surprising amount of information for a 4 page chapter!

It should be clear by now that the book is full of great content. It is broken into small, readable sections, contains loads of application, provides questions to stimulate discussion, and it even closes each chapter off with a sample prayer about the chapter’s particular topic that serve well as templates that you and your spouse may want to model your prayers on.

Honestly, I can’t say there are any negative aspects of this book. Sure, there are other books out there with an even more in-depth look at the many marriage topics included here, but this book will still serve as an excellent jumping off point for discussion in your marriage.

  1. My top marriage book would have to be Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas – I highly, highly, highly recommend it!!… We have also received What Did You Expect by Paul David Tripp, and Real Marriage by Mark and Grace Driscoll… both are supposed to be excellent resources.

  2. We love all three of those books! Thanks for the recommendations! I am going to add those to the list of books to review on here :) Thanks!
